Environmental Setting: Like Las Vegas, all of the major cities in Megalopolis are near rivers. Not only did the rivers provide access to water but also to transportation routes. Unlike Las Vegas, Megalopolis experiences temperate climate with year round precipitation. The northern region sees colder winters and and cooler summers while the southern portion gets more humid and hot summers and mild winters. Watershed programs are also important to Megalopolis due to the dense populations which create pollution. Likewise, Las Vegas must also monitor and control water since the region receives little to no precipitation and the hydroelectric powered Hoover Dam depends on water.
Historical Settlement: Native Americans populations belonging to the Eastern Woodland Culture Complex called present day Megalopolis home long before European settlement. The Native Americans were the first to modify the forested landscape in favor of farmland. Dutch and British settlers arrived in the early 1600's, over 200 years before reaching Las Vegas. Megalopolis is also home to Ellis Island where immigrants from all over would come making the region one of the most diversified in the world.
Political Economy: When British colonists settled along the Atlantic Coast, they set out to export much needed raw materials to Britain. The port cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore helped create Megalopolis into the wealthiest region that would play significant roles in the industrial and post industrial ages. Las Vegas did not have access to a coastline or harbors that attracted large immigrant populations, nor did the land offer an abundance of natural resources that could be exported. Megalopolis would also become home to Washington DC, the first established capital city of the newly independent United States.
